Biographical details

Dr Benjamin Tang is an Associate Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, University of Sydney. He is a critical care physician and viral immunologist. He is the head of the Nepean Genomic Research Group. He leads a translational research program at the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, Nepean Hospital.

Dr Benjamin Tang received his medical training at Sydney Medical School. He is a Fellow of College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand. He was awarded the Matt Spence medal from the College of Intensive Care Medicine in recognition of his early research work.

Dr Benjamin Tang was also trained in clinical epidemiology at the School of Public Health, University of Sydney. He had published several highly cited systemic reviews and meta-analyses in Lancet, Lancet Infectious Diseases and Critica Care Medicine.

Dr Benjamin Tang undertook his PhD work in the laboratory of geneticist Ian Dawes. His research in the genomic study of sepsis led to him receiving the prestigious NHMRC Post-doctoral fellowship. During his post-doctoral years, he worked with immunogeneticist David Booth to investigate the immune response of influenza infection. This work has recently led to him receiving the prestigious Clive and Vera Ramaciotti Establishment Grant for young scientist.

Currently, his research includes viral immunology, sepsis and development of molecular diagnostics.

Research interests

A drop of blood can save lives. A drop of blood contains megabyte of data hidden in the genetic codes of circulating plasmacytoid dendritic cells, the most potent virus-sensing cells in human. Normally, this valuable data is inaccessible to doctors at the bedside because plasmacytoid dendritic cells are so few in numbers that they can’t be measured by conventional laboratory assay (one drop of blood contains 100,000 white cells but only 80 plasmacytoid dendritic cells). We have developed an assay that detects plasmacytoid dendritic cells in a single measurement using a drop of blood.

We aim to bring this assay from our laboratory to the bedside to assist clinicians better diagnose viral infection. Currently, we are investigating the utility of this assay in clinical settings, including emergency departments, hospital wards and intensive care units. Studies currently underway include;

1. The use of immuno-biomarker gene-expression assay to improve diagnosis of respiratory tract infection - a multi-centre prospective cohort study of patients in emergency departments to assess the assay's diagnostic accuarcy in identifying viral aetiology of respiratory tract infection.

2. The effect of virus-activated plasmacytoid dendritic cells in the infected lung - a bronchoscopic study of lung infection in patients with viral pneumonitis to assess the role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in driving the progression towards severe respiratory failure.

3. The use of biomarker in peripheral blood to assess abnormal immune response in the viral infection of the lung - a comparative analysis of immune response between human and mice models of severe viral infection.
