Biographical details

Professor Bernard Balleine is a behavioural neuroscientist who conducts research on the neural mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal psychological functioning. He is internationally recognised as a research leader in the field of ‘the neural bases of decision-making’ and has been instrumental in developing this field. He notes, “decision-making is the ability of humans and other animals to choose between competing courses of action based on the relative value of the actions’ consequences. Underlying the act of decision-making are functional processes in the brain in regards to how we choose or deliberate between actions, i.e. motor control that is associated with planning. I am interested in these processes that underpin how a person thinks through strategies or plans and then integrates values or motivations to make decisions. So we are studying how cognition and emotion work together in the process of decision-making”. Importantly, decision-making ability is often impaired in persons with neurodegenerative (e.g. dementia) or psychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia; bipolar disease; depression), which in turn has an effect on the ability to control voluntary action. Therefore, understanding the functioning of brain circuitry in normal and disordered states is vital to facilitating early diagnosis and effective treatment of these disorders. Professor Balleine is past Director of Research in the Brain Research Institute at UCLA (2005-2009) and currently is Leader of the Sydney Neuroscience Network at the University of Sydney and Visiting Professor at California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He has been elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Research interests

As Director of the Behavioural Neuroscience Laboratory at BMRI, Professor Balleine oversees a team of researchers conducting studies on the neural bases of decision-making. The team conducts basic as well as translational research on nervous system functioning in normal versus disordered states such as Parkinson’s Disease Dementia, schizophrenia and depression.

Projects include studies on the changes in neural circuitry underlying the cognitive deficits seen in Parkinson’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia, with the aim of identifying several potential targets for early diagnosis or treatment. In this domain his team is investigating the role of the thalamo-striatal pathway and striatal cholinergic function in deficits indecision-making associated with Parkinson’s Disease Dementia.

Other projects involve the use of behavioural, circuit-level, cellular, genetic and imaging tools to assess the learning and the motivational processes that influence decision-making in healthy subjects and those with specific psychiatric disorders. For example, studies on neurodegeneration-induced changes in striatal cellular plasticity and associated circuitry are underway, as well as assessment of addiction-related effects on the reward values that provide feedback in the decision network. In healthy subjects his team is investigating the role of opioid processes in the cognitive control of action, the role of the amygdala in habitual actions and how actions and action values are acquired and evaluated at a neural level.
