Biographical details

Dr Brad de Vries is a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and NHMRC Early Career Fellow in the School of Public Health. He currently has a half-time clinical and half-time research load which puts him in an excellent position to conduct clinical research. He has completed a masters of medicine in clinical epidemiology and three research degrees including a PhD thesis on the prediction and prevention of caesarean section. He is experienced in the design and conduct of clinical observational studies and randomised controlled trials, and in statistical methods such as logistic regression and time to event analysis.

Research interests

Brad's current work focuses on methods of safely reducing the caesarean section rate and improving other maternal and perinatal outcomes. He and his research team are conducting large multicentre clinical trials to assess if manual rotation from occiput posterior or occiput transverse position in labour prevents operative delivery, and developing methods to predict caesarean section for slow progress in labour with the aim of assessing induction of labour for preventing caesarean section. He is supervising several observational studies relating to caesarean section and caring for women in labour.

His past work has included investigations into the mechanisms of vertical transmission of viruses, using laboratory techniques including PCR and flow cytometry.

Current projects

(1) The POPOUT Trial: a randomised controlled trial of manual rotation from occiput posterior position in the second stage of labour for preventing operative delivery (www.popout.me).

(2) The TURN-OUT Trial: a randomised controlled trial of manual rotation from occiput transverse position in the second stage of labour for preventing operative delivery.

(3) The prediction and prevention of caesarean section in labour. A series of projects focused on predictive modelling and a planned randomised trial of induction of labour for women at high risk of caesarean section in labour, for preventing caesarean section.

(4) The development of national birthweight standards for gestational based on clinical factors such as onset of labour.

(5) The development of a program to implement stopping oxytocin in the active phase of induced labours throughout New South Wales, which has been shown to reduce the risk of caesarean section and other adverse outcomes.
