Biographical details

Professor Bruce Neal is Senior Director of the Food Policy Division at the George Institute for Global Health, Chair of the Australian Division of World Action on Salt and Health, and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, Imperial College London. He is a world-renowned expert in the design, conduct and analysis of large-scale clinical trials and meta-analyses who leads a program of clinical research in cardiovascular disease and diabetes. He also established and leads the George Institute’s internationally reputed Food Policy Division that houses a WHO Collaborating Centre in salt reduction, where he conducts innovative food policy research and advocacy. Professor Neal is a founding member of the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration (BPLTTC) whose findings have informed national and international clinical practice guidelines. Most recently he was senior author of a major BPLTTC report (Lancet 2014) highlighting the potential for a novel risk-based approach to the allocation of blood pressure lowering therapy that could treat less people but prevent more strokes and heart attacks. Professor Neal is also an international expert on the subject of salt reduction and has successfully advocated (in partnership with the WHO) for all Member States of the UN to adopt population targets for salt reduction. In collaboration with Bupa, he developed FoodSwitch, an award-winning smartphone application that empowers consumers to make better food choices and underpins a global program of community engagement and advocacy. International partners (including overseas government agencies) in more than a dozen countries are now using FoodSwitch, with the technology designed to deliver a new global standard for tracking the composition of the food supply.

Research interests

Professor Neal has a long-standing research interest in cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including the environmental determinants of high blood pressure and poor cardiovascular health. His research focuses on two major themes: (a) clinical research in cardiovascular disease and diabetes and (b) research related to food policy and the dietary determinants of ill health. He designs, leads and contributes to numerous investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials involving hundreds of sites and thousands of patients around the world. He has published seminal works on blood pressure management through his role in the BPLTTC and played leading roles in a series of trials that define the clinical management of patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. He was the Asia-Pacific lead for the SHARP study, which demonstrated the benefits of lipid lowering treatment for chronic kidney disease (Lancet 2011), and was central to the conduct of the ADVANCE trial which defined new approaches to the management of glucose in patients with diabetes (NEJM 2009). Collectively, his work contributes to the body of evidence supporting a risk-based approach to patient care.

Currently he chairs two international, multicentre trials of canagliflozin (CANVAS and CANVAS-R) in diabetes. He contributes to other large-scale clinical trials including SAVE (evaluating whether treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea with continuous positive airways pressure can reduce the incidence of serious CV events in patients with established CVD), and CREDENCE, a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessing whether canagliflozin can slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Professor Neal’s food policy research program focuses on dietary salt reduction. He established and leads the innovative China Salt Substitute and Stroke Study (SSaSS), a 21,000-person cluster randomised trial in rural China investigating whether salt reduction reduces the risk of stroke. He also is working toward making discoveries that will enhance the quality of the Australian food supply. This includes research defining the characteristics of government and industry that lead to the adoption and implementation of healthy food policies, alongside a strong program of advocacy. Additionally, his international FoodSwitch program aims to quantify and track the world’s food supply using novel technology and community participation.
