Biographical details

Carlos recently became one of our Adjunct Professors, bringing with him over 25 years of international experience in environmental health and in particular in global environmental change and health. He worked at the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety in Australia, prior to joining the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva in 1993, where he worked first as a scientist then as the coordinator of the unit dealing with environmental and occupational health. In 2008 Carlos became the Senior Advisor on Risk Assessment and Global Environmental Change at the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization working in Brazil and in Washington DC. Returning to Australia in 2015, he worked at the NSW Ministry of Health. During 2018, Carlos has been seconded back to WHO/PAHO to lead a new unit on Climate Change and Environmental Determinants of Health, in Washington DC.

Research interests

The environmental and social determinants of health, health inequalities, the health aspects of ecosystem change, climate change and climate related impacts, and urban health.

Current projects

Seconded to the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization leading a team on Climate Change and Environmental Determinants of Health.

Working with coleagues in Brazil on the health impacts of droughs in the Brazilian Northeast

Working with WHO on climate change and health in Small Island Developing States
