Biographical details

Chris is Associate Professor in Medical Education. He is based at the Northen Clinical School and the Office of Education at Sydney Medical School. Previously in Sydney he has worked as Associate Director (Education) in the Charles Perkins Centre, Head of the Office of Medical Education, and then the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education. He is a past Chair of Medical and Dental Admission Committee. He undertakes consultancy in medical education particularly around selection focussed assessment.

Research interests

He is most well known for his medical education research; including community-engaged learning and teaching, selection focussed assessment, professionalism, clinical competence and career choice.

His particular research interests in primary care include evaluating complex interventions in primary care for example multi-disciplinary approaches to falls prevention, musculo-skeletal problems, hypertension management, and mental health.

Teaching and supervision

He is currently leading on the development of a range of interprofesssional teaching activities

He has a small group of medical students undertaking the reseach component of their MD in medical education research

He has an active group of doctoral students in medical education research. Topics include the psychometrics of student assessment, selection in to specialty training, assessing clincial reasoning, and self regualtion in problem based learning. Past students have investigated professionalism, cultural competency in international students, and interdisciplinarity in health research teams.

Awards and honours

In 2014, he shared an Australian Office of Teaching and Learning Citation "For providing a collaborative and dynamic social learning network which enhances the critically important graduate attributes of professionalism and clinical skills required by medical students " at the University of Sydney's Central Clinical School.

In 2014, he shared the Syndey Medical School's Academic Excellence award for the Integrated Community Engaged Learning and Teaching program at the Northen Clincial School - Hornsby
