Biographical details

Dr Christina Marel is a Senior Research Fellow and Program Lead of Treatment and Translation among Complex Populations at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on improving our understanding of, and responses to, mental and substance use disorders in complex populations; and developing innovative, evidence-based resources to support the translation of research into clinical practice. Dr Marel is undertaking an NHMRC TRIP fellowship (2019-21) to bridge the evidence to practice gap in relation to heroin dependence.

Research interests

Dr Marel's broad research interests include improving our understanding of, and responses to, mental and substance use disorders, and developing innovative, evidence-based resources to support the translation of research into clinical practice. In particular, she has undertaken work to examine the harms associated with mental and substance use disorders in relation to heroin dependence, as well as the harms associated with substance misuse among Indigenous Australians. In addition to contributing to the evidence base, Dr Marel has sought out ways to translate this evidence into clinical practice through the development of national clinical Guidelines, online training programs, as well as information booklets and other resources.

Current projects

NHMRC-funded 18-20-year follow-up of the Australian Treatment Outcome Study (ATOS), which aims to examine the long-term mortality, psychopathology, remission, physical health and criminality among people with heroin dependence (2018-21)

Australian Government Department of Health-funded Comorbidity Project, including the development of Guidelines on the management of co-occurring alcohol and other drug and mental health disorders in alcohol and other drug treatment settings (2nd edition); nation-wide distribution; development of a website and interactive copy of Guidelines; development of an accompanying online training program and face-to-face training program, evaluation of the online training program (2014-20)

Evaluation of the Central Australian Youth Link Up Service (CAYLUS) in relation to criminal involvement and substance use. Based in the Northern Territory, CAYLUS supports approximately 16 community initiatives in 22 remote communities aimed at reducing the supply of, and harms associated with, substance misuse among young people across Central Australia (spanning approximately 900 square kilometres); (2014-19)
