Research interests

Keenly interested in the effects of traffic related air pollution on health and the intersection between urban planning, pollution, energy use and health.

Current projects

- The Air Pollution and Mortality and Morbidity in Australian Adults (APMMA) Study, and NHMRC funded study. In APMMA we aim to improve exposure estimates for NO2 and particulate matter (PM2.5) across NSW, to enable AP exposure estimates to be assigned to the 45 & Up Study cohort (the largest in the southern hemisphere). We will study the relationships between air pollution exposures and respiratory and cardiovascular related mortality, morbidity and cancer. This is particularly pertinent in an Australian setting as it will contribute information at the lower end of thedose-response relationship.

- Analyses of the Childhood Asthma Prevention Study (CAPS) cohort to determine the relationship between exposure to air pollution (specifically traffic related) and respiratory and cardiovascular outcomes. As part of this work, I have developed a land use regression (LUR) model for NO2 for western Sydney. NO2 estimates will be assigned to each of the CAPS cohort addresses as a marker of exposure to TRAP.

- Literature review and scoping exercise to determine the extent of academic and organisational activity in the area of defining the health impacts associated with transitioning away from fossil fuels to lower carbon energy forms. This project will help to advise and frame future work for the Centre for Air pollution, energy and health Research (CAR).
