Biographical details

Craig Mellis is Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean at the University of Sydney Medical School and Head of its Central Clinical School. He is a paediatrician and respiratory physician with a strong interest in evidence-based medicine and medical education. Professor Mellis has been a practicing clinician and academic for over four decades, with a varied career that includes founding a medical school. Currently, he is a respiratory physician at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. His research interests include respiratory medicine (asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic cough), clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine, and medical education. Professor Mellis’ research has made significant impact on health outcomes in children with respiratory illnesses, and in medical education– he conducted the first clinical trial in Australian children, of an inhaled corticosteroid for asthma, and was a co-investigator of the first paediatric trial demonstrating the efficacy of a leucotriene receptor antagonist in viral-induced wheezing. He established the first paediatric pulmonary function laboratory in NSW, and has made major contributions to curriculum development for medical students, and clinical trainees in paediatric and adult medicine. Professor Mellis is a strong advocate for evidence-based management of children with asthma – he authored a widely-cited literature review on treatment options for acute asthma in children, and a paper on the management of asthma in schools, which is used frequently in school brochures and pamphlets. He contributed to the National Asthma Council Australia’s 2014 Australian Asthma Handbook. High-quality research underpins evidence-based medicine – accordingly, Professor Mellis lectures on research methods, quality, design and conduct. He teaches annually in the internationally renowned ‘How to teach Evidence-Based-Medicine’ workshop at McMaster University, Canada, a workshop model he helped replicate at the National University of Singapore. Additionally, as Head of the Faculty of Medicine’s Central Clinical School, which incorporates a precinct of several hospitals and research institutes, Professor Mellis oversees the education of medical students and medical professionals. His commitment to improving paediatric health outcomes extends to his role as Life Member ofthe Financial Markets Foundation for Children. The foundation (with Management Board chaired by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia) funds research programs/projects to improve the health and welfare of children in Australia. As Chair of its Grants Committee, Professor Mellis helps fund emerging paediatric researchers in Australia.

After completing a MBBS at the University of Sydney and attaining his fellowship in paediatrics (FRACP), Professor Mellis trained in paediatric respiratory medicine at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. On return to Australia he established the first paediatric pulmonary function laboratory in NSW, and held senior clinical appointments in paediatrics and respiratory medicine at various hospitals. He completed a Master of Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and subsequently established, and for a decade, led, the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Westmead. He gained his MD on studies of ‘Bronchial Responsiveness in Children: Clinical and Epidemiologic Applications’. From 1997-2003 he was Douglas Burrows Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health and Head of the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health at Sydney Medical School. Professor Mellis relocated to the Gold Coast, QLD in 2003 to successfully establish a new medical school (MBBS program) at Bond University as Foundation Dean and Foundation Head of Medicine. He returned to the University of Sydney in 2005 as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Head of its Central Clinical School.

Professor Mellis is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Medical Journal of Australia, Australian Prescriber, Paediatrics and Child Health, and Paediatric Drugs.

He is past President of the Paediatric Research Society of Australia, and of the NSW State Branch of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. He was a Director on the Board of Management of the Asthma Foundation of NSW. Professor Mellis has served on numerous expert panels reviewing hospitals, paediatric services, research institutes, and universities. He has been awarded the RACP John Sands Medal for Outstanding Service to Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and its Faculties, and inducted into the Asthma Foundation of New South Wales Hall of Fame, and became Life Member of the RACP in 2014.

Research interests

Professor Mellis’ varied research interests include paediatric respiratory medicine, clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. This includes development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate evidence-based medicine curricula. His most research focus is on medical education, particularly peer-assisted learning, and team-based learning.

Respiratory medicine research includes clinical trials in children with asthma, chronic cough, pneumonia, and cystic fibrosis where the research results have informed evidence-based management of these important paediatric conditions. Professor Mellis has contributed significantly to the body of evidence on the management of paediatric asthma (including the role of inhaled corticosteroids). His work in this field has featured in evidence-based asthma management guidelines – including the 2014 Australian Asthma Handbook. He was a member of the team that conducted the first trial demonstrating the clinical efficacy of a leucotriene-receptor antagonist for the management of viral-induced wheeze in children, and the associated reduction in healthcare resource . Additionally, he was involved in a recent multicentre trial on the management of chronic cough in children – which has contributed to the evidence for developing a management algorithm for paediatric chronic cough that is currently being tested in a further collaborative clinical trial.

Currently, Professor Mellis’ focus has shifted predominantly toward medical education research. Beyond teaching evidence-based medicine, his interests extend to optimising the delivery of medical education and using the research results to develop/improve medical school curricula. He supervises research on a range of education delivery methods including team-based learning, bedside teaching, problem-based learning, and peer-assisted learning, and peer-based assessment (where medical students act as peer tutors and assessors). Together with the Central Clinical School team, he has introduced the famous ‘teaching on the run’ program to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital – over 250 Resident Medical Officers have completed this teacher training program, who are now actively involved in teaching medical students.
