Biographical details

Professor David Lewis is Director of the Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre and Professor at the University of Sydney, within the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Westmead Clinical School. He is the Discipline Leader for STI/HIV within the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity. David trained in the UK as a medical student at Oxford University (pre-clinical) and the London Hospital Medical College, London University (clinical). Following Senior House Officer positions in General Medicine, Haematological Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Genitourinary and HIV Medicine, David underwent specialist training in both Microbiology and Genitourinary and HIV Medicine. In 1997, David was awarded a 3-year Wellcome Trust Training Fellowship in Clinical Tropical Medicine and, as a Wellcome Trust Fellow, undertook a PhD which focused on the pathogenesis of chancroid. His PhD research was undertaken jointly at Imperial College London (UK) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, USA). Following successful completion of his PhD, David worked in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine at consultant level in London. In 2004, David moved to South Africa to take up the position of Head of the STI Reference Laboratory within the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD, a Division of the National Health Laboratory Service). In 2012, he took on the role of Head of the newly created Centre for HIV and STIs within the NICD. David left the NICD to take up his new post in Australia in mid-2014. David has over 27 years' experience in clinical, microbiological and public health aspects of STI/HIV. In 1988, he spent 3 months' elective period studying infectious diseases and STI/HIV in Thailand. A further 2 months' training in tropical STIs was undertaken in South Africa in 1996. Whilst at the NICD, David led or assisted with the implementation/laboratory testing of STI/HIV surveys in Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. David has served at the current President of the International Union against STIs (IUSTI) since July 2013. Prior to this, he served 8 years as IUSTI’s Regional Director for Africa (2005-2013). He has substantial experience in organizing international scientific conferences and contributing to scientific conference programmes. He served as a Deputy Editor for Sexually Transmitted Infections for over 12 years and is currently a Joint Editor for Sexual Health and an Editorial Board Member of Sexually Transmitted Infections. David frequently assists the World Health Organization as a Technical Advisor in matters related to STI treatment guidelines, STI strategy, point-of-care diagnostic tests and the Gonococcal Antimicrobial Susceptibility Programme (GASP).

Research interests

David's research interests focus on gonorrhoea, bacterial and viral causes of genital ulcer disease, STIs in men-who-have-sex-with men and sex workers, STI surveillance in resource-poor settings and outreach STI services.

Teaching and supervision

David has taught medical students and post graduate students on urethral and vaginal discharge, genital ulcer disease, laboratory aspects of STI/HIV, rapid tests for STI/HIV, syndromic management and STI surveillance. In the UK and South Africa, David also taught nurses, pharmacists and general practitioners on various aspects of STI/HIV.

He is also an AI on a further NHMRC grant awarded in 2016, entitled ‘A randomized controlled trial of azithromycin versus doxycycline for the treatment of rectal chlamydia infection in men who have sex with men’ (CI-A Jane Hocking, University of Melbourne). David is continuing to work as a research collaborator with on-going projects in Africa focused on STI/HIV surveillance and genital tract inflammation. He is a co-investigator on ‘A GIFT (Genital Inflammation Test) for HIV prevention’ funded in 2016 for a second three year period by the South African Medical Research Council (Co-Principal Investigators Jo-Ann Passmore and Lindi Masson).
