A/Prof Winlaw is a clinician and researcher. He completed his MD at St Vincent's Hospital and did further training in transplantation and paediatric cardiac surgery. He now leads this service at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

He has research, clinical and administrative committments. He is a member of the Medical Services Advisory Committee, Department of Health and Aging, Australian Government.
