Biographical details

Clinical Associate Professor Smita Shah recieved her medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Scotland and a Master of Community Health at the University of Sydney.

Smita is the Director of the Primary Health Care Education and Research Unit at Westmead Hospital, Western Sydney Local Health District.

Smita has developed, evaluated and managed programs and research projects in immunisation, asthma, promotion of healthy lifestyle, obesity prevention and Aboriginal health which have fostered and strengthened partnerships at national and international levels. She has been an outstanding advocate for effective education and training in lung health and healthy lifestyle to improve health outcomes. Smita has produced comprehensive teaching resourcesto enable dissemination and ensure the long term sustainability of evidence based health promotion programs. The programs have attracted local, national and international attention, including recognition as good practice programs by UNICEF MENARA (Middle East and North Africa Regional Office).

Teaching and supervision

Smita is passionate about teaching. Every year she actively participates in the teaching and examining of medical students at the University of Sydney. She has developed two new Inter-professional Independent Learning Activities for 1st and 2nd Year medical students and final year pharmacy students to engage with the community as part of an inter-professional learning and teaching experience for the University of Sydney. Smita's programs have attracted the attention of universities in Australia and overseas including Jordan, and Hamburg, Germany.

Awards and honours

Smita’s achievements have been recognised nationally and internationally. In 2015, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) awarded Smita its Excellence in Healthcare Award. In 2014, Smita received three Quality Awards from the Western Sydney Local Health District: The Community Choice Award, The Partnership Award and The Board Award. In 2011 Smita was also honoured to receive the prestigious President’s Award from the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand at the Annual Scientific meeting for “being an outstanding respiratory health advocate” and in 2009, she received the University of Sydney Alumni Award “in recognition of the personal contributions made to the enrichment of our society through the dedication to community service” in the category of Community Achievement.
