Research interests

Garry is passionate about his studies of the structures and interactions of Proteins. And in particularly in the study proteins that act at the interface surfaces of cells and viruses and consequently central to cell infection and host immune interactions and protection.

HIV and Immunology Studies: He led a productive HIV-Protein Interactions Laboratory for a decade at Westmead Hospital and has supervised more than 30 laboratory personnel and students (eg 20 Honours and PhD students from the University of Sydney and the Universities of Wollongong, UTS and NSW). His HIV studies have led to several key discoveries in HIV cell-receptor (CD4) and coreceptor interactions that have changed paradigms in the understanding of CD4 structures in HIV infection and Immunology and have promoted new models of CD4 interactions with HIV. In studying Avian and Pandemic Influenzas and host antibody Immune protection new paradigms are being delivered to reveal how, by studying herd immunity to conserved protein sites of influenza's proteins, broad acting antibodies can be identified to potentially protect against all strains of influenza and therefore core for the design of universal influenza vaccines. This work is also being extended into studies of other viruses including Hendra/Nipah viruses and more recently Ebola virus, as well as the Bacterium,Neisseria Meningitidis. He is a reviewer of Grants and Fellowships, Journal manuscripts and examiner of PhD/Honours theses. The quality and impact of his studies is evident from the number of citations (>1,300) of his publications by others and a citation H index of 19.
