Biographical details

Dr Geoffrey Herkes is a consultant neurologist with clinical and teaching appointments at the Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), North Shore Private, and Sydney Adventist Hospital. He trained at Sydney University, and received his PhD from the University of Queensland, before spending 3 years at the Mayo Clinic, USA. He is currently Senior Staff Specialist in Neurology at RNSH and Clinical Assoc. Professor of Medicine at Northern Clinical School

Research interests

The major research interests of Dr Herkes include neuropharmacology, neurophysiology and epilepsy. He has been an investigator in over 60 clinical trials. Major interests and active projects involve status epilepticus, prolonged neurophysiological monitoring in ICU, new pharmaceuticals, ethics in medicine, and medical law, as well as clinical trials in stroke, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

Teaching and supervision

Dr Herkes is a keen teacher, with lectures both at national and international level. He hassupervised candidates for honours and PhD degrees. Teaching has been a passion for over 25 years, teaching medical and nursing students as well as post clinical fellows. He has been the advanced trainee supervisor of neurology registrars at RNSH for more than 20 years

Associations

Dr Herkes has served on many major national and international boards, including the Epilepsy Society of Australia (past treasurer), and the Aust New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN)(past treasurer and scientific programme chair). In addition, he has served previously as Head of the Department of Neurology at RNSH, and currently serves on advisory committees to the National Prescribing Service (“medicineinsight”), as well as being chair of the Human Research Committee of the North Shore Local Health District (a lead HREC).

Dr Herkes has served on the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee of the TGA, Canberra since 1998, and has chaired that committee (subsequently the Advisory Committee for Prescription Medicines) since 2009. He has been a member of the Pharmaceutical Subcommittee (PSC) of the TGA since 2009.
