Biographical details

Glenn Salkeld is a health economist and has received more than $28 million in peer reviewed grants, including three 5 year NHMRC program grant in screening and diagnostic test evaluation. Prof Salkeld brings conceptual and methodological expertise in the elicitation of citizen and patient preferences, applied to two major research streams – one in preventive health and the other in surgical care. His current research work with the Screening Test Evaluation Program (STEP) has focussed on developing a conceptual framework for screening and diagnostic test evaluation based on the implementation of multi-criteria decision analysis. The latter has resulted in the creation of an on-line translation platform – a decision support program that combines the best available evidence with individual’s preferences to produce an opinion when comparing prevention or treatment options. The development of this easy to use, easy to access translation tool has particular application to chronic disease where patient centred decision support tools are needed to help cut through the complexity of the many options for disease management.

Professor Salkeld was a member of the Board of the Sax Institute and a member of the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee Economic Subcommittee for 6 years. He has worked extensively with the World Health Organisation and AusAID in teaching economics and evidence-based medicine to health professionals in numerous countries including South Africa, India, Iran, Estonia, China and Hungary.
