Biographical details

I trained and worked as a veterinary surgeon from 1991 before completing a PhD in molecular medicine at the University of Auckland in 2004. As a post doctoral researcher I have worked in Brisbane (Eskitis Institute) and Sydney (Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute and the University of Sydney). I am currently based at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney.

Research interests

My research interests include the neuropathology, transcriptomics and genetic epidemiology of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and alcohol-related brain damage. My research group primarily uses human postmortem brain tissue, but we are also involved in collaborative teams that utilise patient-derived stem cells and transgenic animal models to understand the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases.

Teaching and supervision

My research-focused teaching is largely in the area of neuropathology with a wider interest in chronic diseases. I am currently the course coordinator of the undergraduate 'Pathogenesis of Human Disease' courses (CPAT3201 and 3202).

Current projects

My group has a range of current projects including "how diabetes affects the risk of Alzheimer's disease?"; "adult neurogenesis and the effects of ageing in humans and non-human primates"; "the role of agonal factors in determining gene expression patterns in post mortem brain tissue"; "the role of microglia in alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) and hepatic encephalopathy";"the spreading of pathological tau species in the human brain", "the pathogenesis of white matter loss in ARBD" and "how smoking affects brain atrophy and neuronal loss in ARBD?".
