Biographical details

Dr Greg Fox a respiratory physician, epidemiologist and clinical trialist committed to using research to improve health care among disadvantaged populations. His research focuses on detection and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), a lung infection that kills over two million people each year. Greg's ongoing work ranges from community-wide cluster randomised trials and clinical trials to meta-analysis and evidence-base policy development. Much of his research is in resource-limited settings.

Greg is a CJ Martin Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at Sydney University. He lived in Vietnam for four years, during which time he established a major randomised controlled trial of household screening for tuberculosis. He maintains an active research collaboration in Vietnam, in partnership with the Vietnam National TB program. He currently leads an NHMRC-supported clinical trial that aims to prevent tuberculosis among the family members of patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Vietnam.

Dr Fox completed his PhD at Sydney University, which focused on environmental and genetic determinants of tuberculosis in resource-limited settings. He subsequently completed a post-doctoral fellowship at McGill University in Canada focusing on multi-drug resistant (MDR)-TB and clinical trials. He remains actively involved in research collaborations with Vietnam, Canada and the US. He is a member of the Guideline Development Committee for MDR-TB diagnostics for the World Health Organization.

Dr Fox is actively invove in research capacity building, as Faculty for the Vietnam MECOR (the American Thoracic Society Methods in Clinical and Operational Research) program since 2011 and Faculty for the McGill University International TB Research Methods course since 2014.

Research interests

Dr Fox's research interests include the epidemiology of infectious disease in resource-limited setting, cluster randomised trials, and clinical trials. He also has interests in systematic reviews and meta-analyses, translation of evidence into policy, decision analysis and capacity building in research.

Teaching and supervision

Dr Fox's teaching interests including drug resistant TB, design and implementation of clinical trials, meta-analysis and clinical epidemiology.

Current projects

Current projects include:

- A clinical trial of preventive therapy for mult-drug resistant tuberculosis in Vietnam (the VQUIN Trial)

- A cluster randomised trial of household contact investigation in Vietnam (the ACT2 study)

- A cluster randomised trial of community-based screening for TB in rural community (the ACT3 study)

- Reducing the gap between policy and practice: strengthening preventive therapy for TB in 5 countries (the ACT4 study)

- Relapse TB among patients treated with standardised therapy in resource-limited settings

Associations

Dr Fox is a member of the International Union of TB and Lung Disease, the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the McGill International TB Center (Canada).
