Biographical details

Gustavo is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Public Health, Sydney Medical School. His research focuses on the effectiveness of contemporary interventions for musculoskeletal conditions. He is also interested in health services and translational research, currently collaborating with Sydney Health Partners on the implementation of a model of care for acute low back pain in emergency departments. Gustavo is an associate member of the Australia & New Zealand Musculoskeletal (ANZMUSC) Clinical Trials Network and an invited member of the low back pain guideline development committee within the European Pain Federation (EFIC).

Research interests

Gustavo is interested in the primary and tertiary care management of people with musculoskeletal conditions, such as low back pain and osteoarthritis. The work Gustavo has led is published in top ranking general medical (BMJ) and specialist journals (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases), and he has authored two Cochrane reviews. His papers have been cited 401 times, published with editorials, summarised in leading journals (New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine), featured in major media (The New York Times), and changed clinical guideline recommendations.

Teaching and supervision

Gustavo has received the Dean’s Citation Award for Learning & Teaching from the Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Sydney as a recognition of his teaching excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Discpline of Physiotherapy.

Current projects

SHaPED: The Sydney Health Partners Emergency Department (SHaPED) trial is a stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial that will evaluate the implementation of the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) model of care for acute low back pain at three urban and one rural emergency departments in NSW. Training in the model of care is sequentially rolled out at the four emergency departments; and we will judge success of the implementation by comparing outcomes before and after training. Outcomes are routinely collected measures of use of imaging studies and opioid analgesics, and inpatient admission.
