Biographical details

Dr. Hany Abed is a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist. Dr. Abed undertook his training in cardiology in 2007 – 2008 at John Hunter Hospital. Following this, he undertook his PhD studies in the University of Adelaide on the topic of obesity and atrial fibrillation. During his PhD studies he undertook simultaneous pre-clinical and clinical research looking at the relationship between weight changes and the structural and electrical substrates promoting atrial fibrillation. His research was awarded the first prize for Ralph Reader Prize of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand in Perth, 2011. In 2012 he studied the effect of various pro-fibrosis markers in the genesis of atrial fibrillation in obesity, and in particular the effect of the endothelin system. For his research, he was a finalist at the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society’s Young Investigator Award, in Japan.

In addition, Dr. Abed worked on a landmark prospective clinical study investigating the effect of weight and cardio-metabolic risk factor management on the burden of atrial fibrillation and cardiac structure. Dr. Abed was awarded first prize at the young investigator award by the American Heart Association, in 2012. The cardiac structural correlations and implications for the study were presented and awarded the Young Investigator Award first place by the American College of Cardiology. In addition, Dr. Abed was extensively trained in clinical cardiac electrophysiology under the mentorship of Dr. David Wilber in Chicago, Illinois between 2012 and 2014. Upon return to Australia, Dr. Abed has been appointed as staff cardiac electrophysiologist at Concord Hospital and conjoint senior lecturer at Sydney University. Dr. Abed is interested in all aspects of cardiac arrhythmia and electrophysiology, as well as the interface between cardio-metabolic disease and myocardial arrhythmia substrates.
