Biographical details

Hudson Birden is Senior Lecturer, population health and clinical leadership, with the University Centre for Rural Health, North Coast and the Sydney School of Public health.

He is also a Founding member and Associate of the Sydney Emerging Infections and Biosecurity Institute, (name changed to Marie Bashir Institute in 2013) and an Associate of the Centre for Values, Ethics, and the Law in Medicine (VELiM), Sydney School of Public Health.

He holds an MPH from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine, Discipline of General Practice, University of Sydney.

He was an inaugural year scholar of the US Public Health Leadership Institute, a joint venture of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of California. After completing the program, he was invited to join the faculty of the Insititute. In this affiliation he served as Chair of the Leadership and Vision and Information and Communication Seminars from 1992 until 1997.

He began his academic career at the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Medicine, Department of Community Medicine, where he developed, coordinated, and taught several courses, including, in 1986, the first postgraduate course in the US devoted to the HV/AIDS epidemic. UConn Medical School was a pioneer in community based medical education, and Hudson served on the Community Curriculum Planning Committee from his initial appointment there until he moved to Australia in 2002.

His research interests include:

  • medical education, particularly through long term intensive clinical placements and professionalism in medicine
  • Infectious diseases epidemiology, particularly sexually transmitted infections
  • the influence of infectious diseases on human history
  • Leadership in Medicine

He also continues to hold the post of Clinical Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Hartford (CT, USA), where he teaches epidemiology and public health law and ethics in the postgraduate public health nursing program and a course in the history, literature, and music of the Caribbean.
