Biographical details

Professor Ian Hickie, AM is a psychiatrist – he is Executive Director of the Brain & Mind Research Institute (BMRI) at the University of Sydney, Professor of Psychiatry at Sydney Medical School, a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, a former NHMRC Australia Fellow (2007-2012), and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. In 2012 he was appointed one of Australia's first National Mental Health Commissioners, to oversee enhanced accountability for mental health reform in Australia. Prof Hickie is a leading Australian voice on mental health issues, an internationally renowned researcher in clinical psychiatry and has been a key driver of enhanced health service delivery in this field. He has a special interest in youth mental health, in particular prevention and early intervention in anxiety and emerging mood disorders. Nationally, Prof Hickie is recognised for his role over the past two decades in using clinical, health services and population health data to drive innovations in health services, particularly in the primary care setting, including increased access to psychological treatments. In recent years, Prof Hickie in partnership with Prof Patrick McGorry, has been at the forefront of developing and evaluating the primary-care-based youth mental health service called headspace: the National Youth Mental Health Foundation. Prof Hickie also has been a major voice advocating for enhanced health and social services for those with persistent mental illness and for increased accountability in the delivery of those services. After completing his MBBS (Hons) and specialist training in psychiatry (FRANZCP), Prof Hickie later completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) on ‘interpersonal relationships and depressive disorders’, at the University of New South Wales. Professor Hickie moved to the USA in 1993 as Harkness Fellow of the Commonwealth Fund of New York and an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina. He returned to Australia in 1995 as Director of the Academic Department of Psychiatry, which he established at St George Hospital, Sydney, and in 1997 he was appointed Professor of Community Psychiatry at the University of NSW. From 2000 to 2003, Professor Hickie was the inaugural CEO of beyondblue: the national depression initiative, and from 2003 to 2006 he served as Clinical Advisor to this organisation. At beyondblue he established important depression awareness, prevention and early intervention programs as well as infrastructure, national community and primary care partnerships, and mechanisms and evaluative processes for large and small grants, all of which underpin the internationally-recognised work of beyondblue and provide evidence of the major positive outcomes achievable from a well-coordinated, community-led and clinically-informed health agency. Alongside his many achievements in mental health research, advocacy and service delivery, stands Prof Hickie’s stewardship since 2003 of the flagship Brain & Mind Research Institute (BMRI) at The University of Sydney, serving as its inaugural Executive Director. The BMRI is tasked with developing research, training and clinical services infrastructure to reduce the national health burden from psychiatric and neurological disorders (including substance abuse, depression and dementia). From 2003 to 2006 Prof Hickie served asa Board Member for Research at the Mental Health Council of Australia, and was at the forefront of national movements to assess consumers’ and carers’ experiences of mental health services - resulting in key publications such as the 2004 policy document ‘Investing in Australia’s Future’ and the 2005 report ‘Not for Service’ written in partnership with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission – the latter being one of Prof Hickie’s “proudest achievements”. “The reports focused national attention on the importance of reshaping mental health services to concentrate on key social, educational and economic outcomes” he says. This was fundamental to the COAG agreement of 2006-2011 that resulted in an additional AUD 5.5 billion expenditure in mental health and the introduction of access to psychological services within the Medicare scheme. Subsequently, Prof Hickie was awarded Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division, in the Australia Day 2006 Honours List – for services to medicine in the development of key national mental health initiatives and general practice services in both the public and non-government sectors. The same year in October, the Australian Financial Review included Professor Hickie in its list of the top 10 cultural influences.

Prof Hickie is the recipient of additional prestigious awards including: the 2005 Margaret Tobin Award of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and the 2009 Research Australia Advocacy Award for his work in mental health advocacy. In 2007 he was awarded a 5-year NHMRC Australia Fellowship, the highest-ranked competitive biomedical fellowship in Australia, which is designed to attract and retain leading health and medical researchers in Australia. Successful applicants have leading international status and conduct research programs of major impact and benefit to Australia.

Prof Hickie has a prolific research track record. Alongside major national research reports on the evaluation or delivery of mental health services he has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, with >12,500 citations and an h-index of 53 (web of science, 2014). Since returning to full-time academia in 2004 after being CEO of beyondblue, Professor Hickie has received > AUD 33 million in NHMRC competitive grant funding. He now leads an NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (2014-2018) devoted to optimising treatment options for young people with emerging mood disorders. Professor Hickie also is a chief investigator in the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence for improving suicide prevention in Australia, led by Prof Helen Christensen.

Research interests

Professor Hickie’s clinical psychiatry research has focused on using new technologies (e.g. structural and functional neuroimaging; immune markers; circadian measurements) to help delineate novel pathways in depression and other mood disorders – including the role of genetic (stress-sensitivity, disturbed circadian systems) and environmental factors (e.g. alcohol and other substance misuse, dysfunctional relationships, infective illness and disturbed sleep patterns), and of vascular disease in older persons. Internationally, Professor Hickie is recognised for his novel work in post-infective neuropsychiatric disorders (persistent fatigue states), his characterisation of the relevance of sub-cortical vascular disease to onset and course of depression in the elderly, his leadership of population-based approaches to changing attitudes to mental health (particularly depression) and his role in increasing investments in new services (particularly youth services and new e-mental health structures). In partnership with Professor McGorry, he has developed a novel clinical staging framework for emerging and severe mental disorders in young people. Prof Hickie has led the establishment of large clinical cohorts on emerging mood disorders and promoted national epidemiological and longitudinal studies to examine the onset of mood disorders in the wider population. He is a key member of novel international studies (family and longitudinal studies) on this subject.

As a member of two successive NHMRC Program grants between 2005 and 2013 led by Professor McGorry, Prof Hickie has helped to evaluate clinical interventions to reduce the health burden among young persons with severe mental illness and to set national and international benchmarks for mental health care and service delivery. The BMRI has served as the Sydney base for these major national research, education and training programs.

Currently Prof Hickie leads a long-term prospective study of adolescent twins, which involves tracking real-time developmental trajectories of the onset of anxiety and mood, psychotic or substance misuse disorders through adolescence and young adulthood. This unique study has now reached the point enabling reassessment (after 20 years) to help determine the extent to which neurobiological and genetic markers can predict outcomes. This information will be critical to the development of novel prevention or early intervention strategies.

Prof Hickie is passionate about driving evidence-based innovations in the delivery of mental health care and services – including the development of new e-healthcare service systems with potentially wider accessibility than is possible currently. In partnership with the Inspire Foundation, Prof Hickie has played a key role in developing the 'Young and Well' Co-operative Research Centre (CEO: Associate Professor Jane Burns) and is Chair of its Scientific Leadership Council. The Young and Well CRC conducts research to determine the role of online and networked media for improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people aged 12 to 25 years. The CRC brings together young people with researchers, practitioners and innovators from 75 organisations (across the non-profit, academic, government and corporate sectors). In partnership with A/Prof Burns, through this CRC Prof Hickie is at the forefront of developing and testing new e-health interventions to prevent the onset of depression across the life span, and in developing new e-health-based adjuncts to clinical practice.
