Biographical details

John commenced as Director of Australia-China Partnerships at the George Institute for Global Health in February 2015. The position was created to embrace the academic and business opportunities arising from the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) which came into force on Dec 20th 2015. ChAFTA specifically mentions health care and R&D as areas for economic growth.

He also contributes to the work of The George Institute Australia as Professorial Fellow in the Renal and Metabolic Division.

John worked for many years as an academic consultant physician in paediatric nephrology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney. During this time, he founded the Centre for Kidney Research, the home of the Cochrane Renal Group and the CARI Guidelines. The Centre conducts a broad research program, ranging from cell-mediated immunity through to the antecedents of renal disease in Aboriginal children.

During his four years as Medical Director of the Australian Kidney Foundation, he set up a national kidney disease early detection and prevention program, commissioned the first national epidemiological survey of kidney disease, established and chaired the AKF Aboriginal Outreach Committee and was instrumental in founding and chairing the CARI Guidelines, Australia’s national evidence based guidelines for managing kidney disease.

He joined the global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson in 2001, working internationally in pharmacoepidemiology and therapeutic risk management. In Europe he led the multidisciplinary team which resolved the drug safety challenge affecting epoetin alfa at that time (pure red cell aplasia). In Asia as Regional Head he instituted changes in drug safety processes in affiliates across 14 countries. His final position at J&J Pharmaceutical Research and Development was Vice President, Strategic and Business Planning, Benefit Risk Management and a member of the BRM Board.

Since joining the George Institute in early 2014 John has worked on an epidemiological data linkage study of chronic disease in NSW (EXTEND-45) led by A/Prof Meg Jardine, has worked with Prof Vivekanand Jha of The George Institute India on a prospective study of dialysis outcomes in two treatment centres in northern India, and has provided across the board scientific support and partnership to the research programs of The George Institute in Beijing. His work with the business development group of George Clinical involved exploring new opportunities in China, Japan and the USA. He has provided advice on aspects of pharmacovigilance and therapeutic risk management for a variety of George Institute research projects in different parts of the world. Most recently he convened the steering committee and judging panel for theAffordable Dialysis Prize.

He was appointed as Adjunct Professor at the Sydney Medical School in November 2014 and as Adjunct Professor in the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health in March 2015.
