Research interests

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is arguably the most important preventable risk factor for the development of early cardiovacular disease (according to organisations such as the National Heart Foundation of Australia, American Heart Association, World Heart Federation), and is reported to account directly for over 7.5 million death, worldwide, each year. My laboratory's interests are in what role does the brain play in controlling blood pressure and does it play a role in the pathgenesis of hypertension (high blood pressure)?

Recent studies have re-ignited interest in the role of the brain as a major cause of hypertension. There is also increasing interest in the fetal or developmental origins of hypertension, in which an adverse "in utero" environment can predispose the offspring to develop high blood pressure in later life. This may mean this may mean that work stress during pregnancy, or poor diet, r the taking of common medications may cause subtle changes in the developing fetus that put the offspring at increased risk of developing hypertension (and other cardiovascular risk factors) in later life.

One common faactor seems to be exaggerated cardiovascular responses to stress.

Some of my current research interests are looking at whether blood pressure regulation in the offspring is affected by a maternal high fat/high sugar diet, and by commonly used important medcations, such as those for treating cardiac arrhythmia, or depression.

I am also interested in the neural mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular (and respiratory) responses to exercise, which are poorly understood at present. In particular, the role of the hypothalamus in mediating these responses is known, but the details are vague.

We use a combination of physiological and anatomical techniques, in humans and rodents, to investigate these questions.
