Hypertension (high blood pressure) is arguably the most important preventable risk factor for the development of early cardiovacular disease (according to organisations such as the National Heart Foundation of Australia, American Heart Association, World Heart Federation), and is reported to account directly for over 7.5 million death, worldwide, each year. My laboratory's interests are in determine the role that the brain plays in controlling blood pressure and does it play a role in the pathogenesis of hypertension?

What is the brain's role in blood pressure control? On possibility is in homeostatic regulation. The baroreceptor reflex plays a ruca role in refulating blood pressure. What happens to blood pressure in the olng term in the baroreceptors are faulty? Alternatively, how does psychological stressimpact on the risk of hypertension?

There is also increasing interest in the role that an adverse fetal environment may play in hypertension risk in the offspring in later life. For example, a poor diet during pregnancy can have devastating effects on offspring health. There is considerable evidence that very low calorie diets or diets low in protein lead to increased cardiovascular risk in the offspring. Morerecntly, high sugar and/or high fat diets during pregnancy have also been shown to increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Alternatively, taking medications or drugs during pregnancy has obvious risks, such as birth defects. But what about more subtle, or longer term consequences? How do you balance the health of the mother to the health of the baby?

One common factor seems to be exaggerated cardiovascular responses to stress.

I am also interested in the neural mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular (and respiratory) responses to exercise, which are poorly understood at present. In particular, the role of the hypothalamus in mediating these responses is known, but the details are vague.

We use a combination of physiological and anatomical techniques, in humans and rodents, to investigate these questions.
