Biographical details

James is currently Associate Lecturer and PhD candidate within the Prevention Research Collaboration. His work with the PRC is focused on two main elements:

  1. the evaluation of social marketing and mass media campaigns, particularly the NSW Make Healthy Normal Campaign; and
  2. research into how and why researchers do research and the interface between research and policy and practice.

He is also heavily involved in teaching postgraduate students, particularly those enrolled in a Master of Public Health. Additionally, he is conducting research into teaching and learning practices to help improve the learning experience for students.

Before joining the University of Sydney, James worked in various NSW Government departments, predominately in research and evaluation of chronic disease prevention initiatives.

Research interests

James' research interests are predominately in physical activity, overweight and obesity, tobacco control, and evaluation of public health programs. He has interests in research translation and the interface between researchers and decision makers.

Additionally, James is increasingly interested in research into teaching and learning in the postgraduate context.

Current projects

Evaluation of the NSW Make Healthy Normal Campaign

The MHN Campaign is part of the NSW Government's Healthy Eating and Active Living Strategy. The campaign aims to challenge the normalisation of overweight and obesity and encourage healthy behaviour changes. James is leading the evaluation of the campaign, in partnership with A/Prof Bill Bellew and Prof Adrian Bauman.

How are public health organisations' using Facebook?

This project, being conducted with Dr Becky Freeman, aims to review the use of Facebook by public health organisations in Australia. In particular, James is looking at what public health organisations do on their Facebook pages and what level and type of engagement they get from Facebook users.

Evaluation of changes in assessment practices in a postgraduate public health unit of study

Together with Dr Philayrath Phongsavan, James has designed and implemented improved assessment practices and their evaluation within a core unit of study for Masters of Public Health students.
