Research interests
Jonathan Anderson has been extensively involved in clinical research in sexual health and HIV : he led studies on anal disease related to Human Papilloma Virus and recent phase I/II study of novel use of a HPV immunotherapeutic agent for anal intraepithelial neoplasia . He has also contributed at an international level to the debate on screening for anal neoplasia ; his collaborations includes social research on patient knowledge of anal screening and research into the optimum screening tool for anal neoplasia.
He was one of the key drivers behind the Australian HIV Observational Database (AHOD), a clinical database of over 2500 people living with HIV at 27 sites around Australia. The AHOD that has been running for over 10 years; it led to the creation of a Treat Asia HIV Observational Database across the region. The AHOD has contributed to a number of significant recent papers on the risks of antiretrovirals in the Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine.
Other research included the quality of life associated with different types of injection equipment for enfuviritide.
Since obtaining his Masters in Public Health, majoring in economic evaluation, Dr Anderson has been researching the role of economic evaluation in priority setting in HIV. He is a visiting academic with the Health Economics Unit of Deakin University with Professor Rob Carter. He has two recent papers of economic evaluations currently in review by international journals and recently presented the first cost-effectiveness study of circumcision for prevention of HIV in MSM at the 2009 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, Montreal.
