Biographical details

Dr Jane Holmes-Walker was employed as a staff specialist in the Dept of Endocrinology, Westmead Hospital in 1998 after completing her training at Westmead Hospital and Middlesex Hospital and University College Hospitals in London. She completed a PhD in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney on 'The A3243G mitochondrial DNA mutation: Contribution to pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and its complications' awarded in 1999. She has developed a number of new clinical services at Westmead including the Diabetes Transition Support Program for young people with diabetes, The NeuroEndocrine Tumour Service, the Metabolic Bone Disease service and was successful in obtaining long term funding for the Adult Genetic Metabolic Disease service. She is on the ACI committee for Transition which seeks to improve the management of young people with chronic disease and has been involved in the writing of National Guidelines for management of Type I diabetes and Management of Cystic Fibrosis related Diabetes. HSe has 20 publications in peer reviewed journals.

Research interests

Dr Jane Holmes-Walker's current research interests are in the following areas

1) Clinical Islet cell transplantation

2) Insulin pump therapy including closed loop technology and interpretation of continuous glucose monitoring

3) Management of type I diabetes at the transition

4) Transition of young people with chronic disease and models of care

5) Effects of Androgen Deprivation Therapy for prostate cancer on insulin and bone metabolism.

Teaching and supervision

Dr Jane Holmes-Walker is the coordinator for all Endocrinology teaching at Westmead and coordinates both theStage 2 Endocrinology Block andStage 3 Endocrinology teaching. Her specific interest is in long case teaching.
