Biographical details

Dr Jane Latimer is a Professor in the Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney and works as a Principal Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Musculoskeletal Division of The George Institute for Global Health. She holds an ARC Future Fellowship. Her research work has been both disciplinary and cross-disciplinary as she seeks to provide evidence to answer questions of national and international importance. She leads research in 3 main areas. The first and largest area is the primary care management of spinal pain, while the second and third are rapidly developing areas in paediatrics, specifically fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and children with haemophilia. Her research focuses not only on excellence in research design but also on engaging industry, the community, state and federal governments, philanthropists and high profile global organisations in this work.

She has obtained over $10.5 million in funding to support her research including funding from the NHMRC (she has obtained 9 project grants), ARC, Industry, Federal Government, NGOs and philanthropy. She is in the top 0.2 % of most published back pain researchers in the last five years. She has published over 110 articles in international peer-reviewed journals includingLancet,JAMAandArchives of Internal Medicine. She has also contributed 2 books, 6 book chapters and Letters to the Editor.

She has welcomed the opportunity to share her passion for research with students attending the University of Sydney. She has an excellent record in PhD student supervision with 60% of her students coming from Brazil, Canada, US or Thailand. She has had 10 PhD completions (with 3 further completions by 2014) these students going on to secure leading academic and research positions in Australia and abroad. Three of her local PhD students were awarded NHMRC scholarships to fund their research, while 2 of her Brazilian students were awarded competitive national scholarships. Three of her PhD students published their key findings in the leading medical journals in the world (Lancet, JAMA, Archives of Internal Medicine) and have won a number of awards for their work, while others have received NHMRC project funding to continue their research.
