Biographical details

Janice is the Director of Postgraduate Advanced Studies and Coordinator of the Master of Intensive Care Nursing programs at the Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery (Sydney Nursing School). Janice has had a long career as a professional leader in the field of cardiac nursing including acute cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, intensive care, clinical trials and many years as a clinical nurse specialist, educator and consultant. With this strong profile as a clinician, educator and researcher, Janice joined the University of Sydney as a full-time academic, to lead the postgraduate critical care nursing program. Janice serves on the Editorial Board of Australian Critical Care, is a member of the Agency for Clinical Innovation Cardiac Network, a Member Scholar of the International Institute of Qualitative Methodologies and a Board Member of the International Collaboration of Nurse Scholars (ICoNS).

Research interests

Janice’s program of research has two distinct arms. Her cardio-respiratory research is currently focussed on acute coronary syndrome systems of care. Working with a large interprofessional team with expertise in data engineering, implementation science and information systems, she is exploring the extraction and use of routinely collected data for quality purposes and decision support mechanisms. Janice is also using qualitative methods to understand the cultural/workplace influences of commonly used pathways and risk stratification tools, such as the NSW Chest Pain pathway, and the Grace Risk Score.

Janice has an international profile in patient and family-centred research; she is an expert in qualitative methodologies, in particular, hermeneutic phenomenology. Janice actively mentors and collaborates with advanced practice nurses to develop their capacity for high-quality, theoretically/philosophically-driven qualitative and mixed-methods research with a focus on publication.
