We are studying the adaptive role of muscle reflexes in normal movements and movement disorders. In particular we are looking at the contribution of the abnormal reflex response to the rigidity and tremor of Parkinson's disease, spasticity following stroke and rheumatoid arthritis. Muscle reflexes strongly influence the biomechanics of the limb and thus performance in different tasks. Parallel measures of limb biomechanics (joint stiffness, force and velocity relationships) and reflex activity (extracted from surface EMG) provide insights into the reflex response and also clinically relevant measures of disability and drug response in patients.
