She is a Senior Lecturer in Health Informatics at the University of Western Sydney and an Adjunct Professor in Health Informatics at the University of Sydney and the Ontario-Institute of Technology in Canada.

Joanne’s most recent research led to the development of an original multi-dimensional patient journey modeling framework and toolset known as Essomenic. Essomenic was developed specifically for healthcare and addresses the nuances and inherent complexities of healthcare redesign not readily addressed by ‘non-healthcare’ approaches. Essomenic models provide excellent opportunities for improving the quality of health services delivery by taking a holistic view of the overall ‘system of care’. The methodology has been used in numerous healthcare improvement projects both in Australia and overseas. Services addressed include metropolitan maternity care, remote indigenous maternity care, chronic kidney disease, mental health and ambulatory care.
