She now conducts research in paediatric nursing, child health, the prevention of child abuse and neglect and health workforce capacity building. Her work is focused on early intervention, developing parenting capacity, and improving professional self-efficacy among paediatric health care professionals. She has been involved in research, development and evaluation of a number of child protection programs/interventions. She has also lead the development and implementation of strategies to reduce alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use during pregnancy and throughout the first year of parenting. Jennifer is driving organisational change to promote the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Jennifer publishes widely on topics of high social impact. She is Associate Editor of Child Abuse and Neglect the International Journal, and lead author of the textbook ‘Paediatric Nursing in Australia: Principles for Practice’. Jennifer is also actively involved in influencing policy and practice in nursing, education and health as a member of professional boards and expert advisory committees. She is a member of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and a regular invitee to international conferences and workshops on the subject.

Research interests

Jennifer's research focuses on developing parenting capacity, and improving professional self-efficacy in paediatric and child health care. Her major fields of research expertise are child protection, child psychology and development, and maternal and child health. She has helped develop and validate research tools in these fields. She collaborates widely with clinicians and researchers from a range of disciplines including medicine, psychology, law, public health and social work.

Building the relationship between research, policy and practice, she currently leads the development and evaluation of a clinical training initiative in Australia and overseas. This work is an extension of the research she completed in 2005 following enactment of mandatory reporting legislation for nurses in Queensland.
