Biographical details

Professor Jenny Gunton received her PhD from the University of Sydney in 2003 having studied in Rob Baxter’s lab at the Kolling Institute.

She completed her post-doctoral fellowship in Ron Kahn’s lab at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School in 2005. She returned to Australia to the Garvan Institute and set up the Diabetes and Transcription Factors lab. In 2012 she became the President of the Australian Diabetes Society and in 2014became Chair of Medicine at Sydney University, Westmead Hospital. Her lab will be moving to the new Westmead Millennium Institute in late 2014.

Her research interests include diabetes, obesity, and vitamin D. She is particularly interested in the intersection of transcription factors and their regulation by nutrients.

Research interests

Diabetes, obesity and endocrinology.

My lab has a particular focus on the roles of micronutrients and transcription factors in disease.

Currently we are studying vitamin D and iron in various diseases including acute and chronic liver disease, muscle weakness, diabetes and obesity.

Teaching and supervision

In my lab and clinically, my teaching is one-on-one or small groups. We have honours and PhD students in the lab. I have had 5 successful PhD student completions as primary supervisor since 2005 and 2 as co-supervisor, and no non-completions. CurrentlyI have 2 PhD students.
