Biographical details

Dr Jiao Jiao Li is based at the Kolling Institute at Royal North Shore Hospital. Jiao Jiao completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney in 2015. Before starting at the Kolling Institute in 2017 on her NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, Jiao Jiao worked on developing biomaterials-based solutions to regenerate bone and cartilage tissues. Her current research focuses on investigating the mechanisms underlying degeneration and regeneration following injury in bones and joints. Building on this, she is developing cell- and biomaterials-based solutions to combat chronic musculoskeletal diseases, using a combination of techniques in materials science, cell and molecular biology, and animal models.

Current projects

Musculoskeletal disease is a major contributor to disability, frailty and unhealthy ageing, a common cause of which is bone or joint injury sustained during young adulthood.The satisfactory repair of damaged tissues (bone, cartilage, ligaments and synovium) arising from these injuries remains a significant clinical challenge, often resulting in chronic disease progression. This can culminate in a range of musculoskeletal diseases, such as impaired fracture healing and osteoarthritis, which have detrimental effects on the patients’ quality of life and incur significant healthcare costs. My research aims to develop novel, multidisciplinary strategies for treating musculoskeletal injuries that improves their prognosis.
