Research interests
I have an interest in cardiovascular physiology and monitoring in paediatric anaesthesia, intensive care and surgery, particularly the detection of local, regional and global ischaemia in tissues.
At present I am involved in using optical methods to detect ischaemia/poor perfusion, including Near-infrared spectroscopy and other similar approaches.
In addition I have worked in exercise physiology to understand the cardiovascular limitations to maximal exercise. This has involved using cardiac output monitors in maximal exercise in various settings.
Teaching areas
As a full-time paediatric anaesthetist, I am involved in registrar, medical student and nursing student teaching on a daily basis. This involves a combination of in-theatre teaching, small group tutorials, and departmental meeting lectures.
Teaching in the active clinical environment of the operating theatre is a superb way to enable students to understand important physiological concepts.
