Biographical details

I'm a Senior Lecturer in Qualitative Health Research in the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine, School of Public Health, University of Sydney. Check out my website for more background: http://jmooneysomers.wordpress.com/

Research interests

My research focuses on equity in health and health services research. Research in this area seeks to understand unnecessary and avoidable health differences that put people and communities who are already socially disadvantaged, for example because of sexuality, gender, indigenous status, at further disadvantage. My work has a particular focus on stigmatised conditions such as infectious diseases related to sexual practice and drug use.

I tend to employ qualitative, community-based and participatory methodologies to work in partnership with affected communities, non-governmental organisations and not-for-profits (like ACON Health and Family Planning NSW) to conduct and translate research designed to reduce health disadvantages for LGBTI people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and women. Check out my research projects page for more information on past and current projects.

Teaching and supervision

My teaching focuses on qualitative methods in health research. I've been the Academic Director and Course Coordinator of the postgraduate Qualitative Health Research coursework program since 2011.

I'm open to discuss supervision at all levels as long as they are in my areas of research. My research supervision has been in the following areas: women's journey's to Hepatitis C care; higher education access and outcomes for mature-age Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; experiences of Indigenous Health Workers; models of health care in the Torres Strait; feminisation of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean; social media and adolescent development; ethics and politics of hospital infection control; direct to consumer genetic testing in Australia; growing up with cancer; social capital among brothel based female sex workers in Bali.

Current projects

Lesbian, bisexual and queer women’s health survey
Tobacco-control project targeting lesbians, bisexual and queer women
Ethics in alcohol and other drug (AOD) research
Patient delivered partner therapy for chlamydia

Check out my research projects page for more information on past and current projects.
