Biographical details

Kate is an Addiction Medicine Specialist and Public Health Physician based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Her work combines treating individuals with alcohol, drug and tobacco problems; promoting the health of communities; and research and teaching.

Research interests

Kate's research focuses on reducing the impact of alcohol and drug use on health. She has a special interest in early detection and asssitance for alcohol problems, and a focus on putting best evidence into day-to-day practice. For the last 15 years she has worked in partnership wtih Aboriginal communities and agencies in research, teaching and clinical service delivery.

Teaching and supervision

Kate teaches a wide range of health professional students, including in medicine and public health. She provides clinical training sessions to practising health professionals, including doctors and Aboriginal drug and alcohol professionals.

Kate is an editor of the book "Addiction Medicine" (now in its 2nd edition) which is a practical clinical guide for doctors and other health professionals. She was also an editor of the "Handbook of Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Work" which was written to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals in this challenging field.

Current projects

Kate leads a Centre for Research excellence and two NHMRC-funded research projects in the field of alcohol use and Indigenous Australians. These are being conducted in partnership with the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council, SA and Inala Indigenous Health Service Qld, and a range of Aboriginal agencies and services and other Universities.

Two current NHMRC projects are described here. The first aims to develop and test an iPad app to make it easier for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to describe their alcohol use for surveys or in a clinical setting. It is important to have accurate data as national surveys are used to inform government funding decisions, and clinically good information helps guide treatment. This app is designed to overcome language barriers in remote settings, and to make it easier for people to describe drinking when they share alcohol or drink out of non-standard containers.

The second project, which started in June 2016, is a large trial of approaches to support Aboriginal community controlled primary health care services to work with alcohol problems. There are many barriers to providing best possible care, including time pressures and the complex health and social needs of patients. This project supports sharing of skills and expertise between services, and provides opportunities for ongoing skills development and regular feedback. The approaches should provide a model for continuing quality improvement in routine clinical practice.

Awards and honours

Kate was part of a team led by Illawarra Aboriginal Medical Service which won two awards in 2014 for settingup an alcohol home detoxification program (the 'A Clinic'). This included 'Best Program' award from the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Network, NSW and Award for Continuity of Care in Aboriginal Health from the NSW Ministry of Health (NSW Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Awards).

Kate received the Senior Scientist Award from the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs in 2007. She has been awarded an NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship from 2017.
