Research interests

Kathy is a Research Fellow at the NRUDRH engaged on projects related to environmental epidemiology and primary health care for people with severe chronic disease. She has a Masters of Public Health and a Diploma of Applied Epidemiology and is a graduate of the NSW Health¿s Public Health Officer Training Program. After a clinical career in cardiovascular nursing, Kathy¿s research career began with cardiovascular epidemiology where she worked on clinical studies of thrombolytic therapies and then a large prospective cohort study of cardiac outcomes in people with established coronary artery disease. As a NSW Health Public Health Officer Trainee, Kathy extended her experience in cancer epidemiology, culminating in her being funded to work with the International Agency of Cancer Research in Lyon, France to assist with the development of research protocols for the study of mobile phones and brain tumours. She has since worked largely in the areas of health service research and on epidemiological studies of cancer, air pollution and climate change and mental health. Her research strengths are in the areas of grant writing, research design, data analysis, and report writing. Kathy has published in peer reviewed journals and has participated in the recruitment and assessment of NSW Health Public Health Officer Trainees.

Kathy also has a strong interest in teaching and building research capacity in the public health workforce. She has spent several years involved with the Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) Strategy, teaching clinicians and medical students about research methods, supporting them in their efforts to publish their work and supervising their research projects.
