Biographical details

Professor Katharine (Kate) Steinbeck is an endocrinologist and adolescent medicine physician – she is the inaugural Medical Foundation Chair in Adolescent Medicine at the University of Sydney. She is a Clinical Academic and Professor of the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health and Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, and Honorary VMO in Adolescent Medicine at the Department of Endocrinology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Prior to her current appointment, Prof Steinbeck was a Senior Staff Specialist in Adolescent Endocrinology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Head of the Youth Consultancy Service, Department of Paediatrics at the Sydney South West Area Health Service and Honorary Associate in Transitional Endocrinology at The Children’s Hospital, Randwick. She is a graduate of the University of Sydney (MBBS, where she was awarded the University Medal), and later completed a PhD at the University. Prof Steinbeck trained in endocrinology and developed a dual career pathway in endocrinology and adolescent medicine – she has extensive experience in the medical management of adolescents, in particular those with disorders of puberty or with chronic illness including diabetes, obesity, cancer Prader-Willi syndrome and cystic fibrosis. Prof Steinbeck holds Australia’s first University Chair in Adolescent Medicine – a position established in 2010 at the University of Sydney in recognition of the need for a focused effort to address the health problems faced by adolescents including the large burden of chronic illness. In her role as Chair, Prof Steinbeck leads a research team working on a number of important areas in adolescent medicine where there are gaps in the evidence needed to improve the health of this group. Prof Steinbeck is working to integrate research and teaching in adolescent medicine, to promote youth health issues and educate and support doctors who treat young people. She is a member of the Sydney Medical School’s Lifespan Research Theme and conducts clinical research in the Academic Department of Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead. She also actively advocates for young people by engaging with the wider community through presentations to teacher groups, NGOs and other professional organisations and as a regular contributor to Richard Glover’s Drivetime on ABC Radio on matters relating to adolescent health. Prof Steinbeck notes “adolescence is a challenging speciality area in medicine – it doesn’t fit neatly into paediatrics and child health or adult medicine. Adolescents are losing out on the health gains made in groups such as younger children. Adolescence is when health trajectories are established for life, yet their medical needs are often poorly understood. Their propensity for risk behaviours against a background of a still-developing brain, demands that communities develop better ways of creating safe environments while supporting emerging autonomy. Moreover there is a significant burden of chronic illness in adolescents, particularly as more children with chronic illnesses survive into adulthood. Transitioning these young people into adult care is complicated by their often-inadequate self-management skills and by a lack of adult medicine specialists with relevant knowledge. We are trying to address these and many more challenges in this important field”. Supporting her endeavours are Prof Steinbeck’s numerous international, national and State-wide professional appointments.

Prof Steinbeck is a member of the Research Committee of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Adolescent Health, and Associate Director at the WHO Collaborating Centre in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity. Nationally she is a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Evaluation of Headspace, member of the NHMRC Translational Group, and holds several appointments at the RACP including Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, and member of the College’s Policy Development Committees relating to children and adolescents. She also is an Advisory Board member for NSW Health’s 2010-2015 Youth Health Policy, and member of the Executive of its Agency for Clinical Innovation Transition in Chronic Illness Network. At the University of Sydney, Prof Steinbeck leads the Faculty of Medicine’s Adolescent Rural Cohort Study, she is co-Chair of Endocrinology and Reproductive Block of the Graduate Medical Program, and member of the Steering Committee for the Boden Institute of Obesity, Nutrition and Exercise.

Research interests

Prof Steinbeck has extended basic research conducted during her PhD, on diet composition and insulin action in experimental obesity, to clinical research on obesity, focusing on adolescents and young adults. These include the Loozit study, the largest published RCT on a community-based weight management program for adolescents, low glycaemic diets in polycystic ovaries and a comparison of weight loss diets in young women (WOW study). Additionally, Prof Steinbeck has collaborated with researchers at the Brain & Mind Research Institute and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research to study hypothalamic satiety factors in adolescent and young adults with Prader-Willi syndrome and the effects of oxytocin on appetite. "The basis of our research in the Academic Department of Adolescent Medicine is to better understand adolescent health trajectories and how we can intervene to improve the health of this group, and influence policies around adolescent wellbeing" says Prof Steinbeck.

As Chair of Adolescent medicine Prof Steinbeck's current research interests include:

  • Puberty hormones and their effects on health and wellbeing in adolescence – Prof Steinbeck leads the ARCHER study, an intensive, longitudinal study of puberty hormone change and the impact of this on physical, mental and psychosocial wellbeing in early adolescence. Despite puberty being the major biological event of adolescence, the extent to which puberty hormone change has an impact on adolescent health and wellbeing, remains unknown. ARCHER is a foundational study, which will extend into later adolescence and aims to generate data to help develop strategies for protecting the health and wellbeing of adolescents. It is based in rural NSW.
  • Defining optimal methodologies in adolescent research – including the use of social media, to assist with engagement and retention in research studies.
  • Chronic illness in adolescence – this includes novel studies on the transition from paediatric to adult care, and the management of complex chronic illness.
  • Alcohol and substance use management in a tertiary paediatric service.
  • Adolescent presentation and management in emergency departments.
  • Development of research into the physical health of out-of-home youth.

Prof Steinbeck’s research has already made significant contributions to clinical practice. For example, transition studies have informed the development of models of care in adult spina bifida. Studies identifying an increased risk of thyroid cancer following irradiation in adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer have altered monitoring protocols and intubation practices during surgery. A study on the metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and diabetes in long-term survivors of cancer enabled the development of evidence-based surveillance. A validated, developmentally specific care plan to identify psychosocial needs of hospitalised youth has been adopted by a number of health districts in Australia and overseas.
