Biographical details

A/Prof Kirsten Black is an academic gynaecologist at the University of Sydney where she is the Joint Head of the Discipline of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Neonatology. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians (RANZCOG) in 2002. She has a Masters of Medicine in Women’s Health from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. She was awarded a Guy’s and St Thomas Charitable Foundation Research Training Fellowship for her PhD work, which examined access to emergency contraception in South London (PhD awarded mid 2008). She undertook sub-speciality training in sexual and reproductive health and is one of few Australians who hold a Membership of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK). She also hold a diploma of diagnostic ultrasound. She combines clinical work, research and teaching and was awarded national teaching awards both in 2014 and 2015. In 2018 she was awarded the Professor J.A.Young medal for exemplary service to the Sydney Medical School, the University and the Community and excellence in research.

Research interests

A/Professor Black has a clinical, teaching and research interest in sexual and reproductive health and chairs RANZCOG’s special interest group in this field. A/Prof Black leads a contraception service at a tertiary referral hospital and undertakes epidemiological and clinical studies in maternal and reproductive health in Australia and the Asia Pacific. She is a member of the International Affairs Committee of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health in the UK and a member of RANZCOG's Global Health Committee.

Teaching and supervision

A/Prof Black teaches into the MD program and plays a key role in co-ordinating the Perinatal and Women's Health block. In 2018 she launched a new Masters in Sexual and Reproductive Health with her colleague DrSawleshwarkar.She is committted to regional capacity building in women's health education and reseach.
