Biographical details

I am a statistician who works in a variety of health and medical areas. I was originally a biologist (PhD, 2007), but much preferred working with data (MBiostats, 2009). Currently I work with the Cancer Epidemiology and Services Research group at The University of Sydney, but I also continue to collaborate with colleagues from other fields. I have previously worked at The Prevention Research Collaboration at The University of Sydney as Senior Statistician, The Sax Institute as the Biostatistician for The 45 and Up Study, and for the NSW Ministry of Health.

Research interests

Linked Health Data

Using linked administrative health data is a relatively new sub-field in Australia. There is great potential in working using this type of data, but it requires sophisticated data processing and methodology. I have worked on projects that use diverse data sources such as hospitalisations, pharmaceutical claims, medical service claims, death registrations, linked together to address important health policy issues.

I am currently working on project examining epidemiology and surgical outcomes for patients with anal cancer in NSW. This project uses data from the Central Cancer Registry linked to the NSW Clinical Cancer Registry, death notifications, and hospitalisations.

Applications of complex methodology

One aspect of my job I enjoy is being able to use my expertise to solve problems for other health researchers. This includes use of propensity scores, 'alternative' regression models such as Tobit regression, analysis of multi-level data, and methods for dealing with missing data. Being able to work with colleagues to define a problem and then take it away to solve it with a sophisticated analysis is something I take pride in doing. I have worked with more complex statistical methods in data from varying areas, including individual time-use data, nested matched-exposure studies, and many more.
