Biographical details

I hold an honorary position at the Sydney Medical School and continue an active collaboration with the Brain Dynamics Center. Since March 2013 I have also held a faculty position at Stanford University medical school, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, and reside in the US.

Prior to this time I was Director of Brain Dynamics Centre (2001 to 2013). At the University of Sydney Medical School, I was founding Professor in Cognitive Neuropsychiatry.

My PhD was awarded in 1996, and it was completed with a British Council scholarship for study at Oxford University.

The focus of my research is "applied personalized neursocience". The goal is to identify biomarkers of disorder and of treatment outcomes that have value for patients and clinicians in real world practice. The techniques used to identify biomarkers are behavioral tests of cognition and emotion, psychophysiology, neuroimaging and genetics.I have specialized in understanding the role of emotions, feelings and how these are regulated.

As of early 2014, I have contributed 228 publications on the use of brain-based measures helping to understand the mental function and treatment outcomes.

The work has been supported by over $11mill in competitive funding.

My work has been recognized by the Presidential award of the American Society for Psychosomatic Medicine in 2008 and the Pfizer Australia Fellowship for 2005-10. I am also a full member of the American College of NeuropsychoPharmacology (ACNP).

Supporting the dissemination of research in a new model of collaboration, I am the Chair of the BRAINnet Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 enabling the sharing of data with a global network of researchers spanning 22 countries.
