Biographical details

Professor Leanne Togher is a speech pathologist who has worked in the area of communication disorders following acquired brain injury for over 25 years. Leanne's work has focused on ways of improving the communication of people with brain injury in two ways. Firstly, she has evaluated direct communication treatment approaches for the person with TBI and secondly, she has empirically evaluated training programs for families and community agencies. Leanne has published training packages for law and justice personnel in conjunction with the Attorney General's Department of NSW. In 2012, she launched a new treatment resource aimed at improving everyday communication for people with brain injury and their families, called TBI Express. This treatment was proven as part of an NHMRC funded clinical trial and is now available for clinicians, people with brain injury, their families, friends and carers. Further trials are being undertaken with TBI Express at The University of Montreal in collaboration with Leanne’s colleagues, Professor Claire Croteau and Professor Guylaine LeDorze. TBI Express will also be evaluated as part of a telehealth clinical trial for people with TBI and their families in 2013-2014.

Leanne is a chief investigator on two NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence. The first is the Clinical Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Rehabilitation, which aims to build the Australian Aphasia Rehabilitation Pathway. The second is the Centre for Research Excellence in Brain Recovery, which aims to improve the outcomes of people with traumatic brain injury and their families. Additionally, Leanne is leading an NHMRC funded five-year longitudinal study of communication recovery in people with TBI. Leanne has a number of international collaborators including Professor Lyn Turkstra (University of Madison, Wisconsin), Professor Audrey Holland (University of Arizona) and Professor Brian MacWhinney (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh). Leanne is the President of the Australian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment and has been invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences and forums. Leanne will be the Conference Chair at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference in Tucson, Arizona in 2013.

Leanne also leads an evidence based practice initiative called speechBITE which provides a free and comprehensive web based listing of the best evidence for speech pathologists nationally and internationally. speechBITE received over 1 million hits in 2011 by speech pathologists and students from over 130 countries.

TBI Express was used in a recent clinical trial in the United Kingdom to train paid support workers of people with brain injury. Togher is Chief Investigator on the NHMRC Clinical Centre of Research Excellence in Aphasia Rehabilitation and Chief Investigator on the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Brain Recovery. Togher also leads a current NHMRC funded 5-year study, which is investigating the longitudinal recovery of communication after traumatic brain injury.
