Biographical details

Mark completed his BSc(Hons) in the School of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University in 1995, then conducted his PhD research in the emerging field of proteomics with Professor Keith Williams in 2000. Mark moved to the USA for post-doctoral training in mass spectrometry with Professor Philip Andrews at the University of Michigan Medical School. Subsequently, Mark took a research scientist role in Pfizer Inc, using proteomics to discovery biomarkers of drug response and drug differentiation. Mark returned to Australia to take up an NHMRC Biomedical career development award to apply proteomics to investigate prognostic and predictive biomarkers associated with colorectal cancer. For this research he ustilised the proteomic infrastructure at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) at Macquarie University where he was appointed as Associate Professor. In 2010, Mark was appointed as APAF Director, leading a 20+ research team to apply proteomics in the life-sciences collaborating with academic and industry partners. Mark was interim Head of the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences for 18 months until Feb 2017. In March 2018 he was selected as the inaugural Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research at the Sydney Medical School, Northern Clinical School, RNSH campus.
