Biographical details
Prior to commencing my position as a Research Fellow with the Kolling Institute of Medical Research I was a Lecturer in Health Sociology at the University of Newcastle. My key research interests post PhD were related to disseminating the findings of my PhD which addressed parental mental illness and the impacts of this on parenting. I have also been involved in clinical research addressing violence, abuse and neglect specifically domestic violence. I continue to be interested in the area's of mental health and domestic violence both of which are related to good maternal and perinatal outcomes. [More...]
Research interests
My current research is specifically focused on the knowledge translation. My research program will develop and test ways to embed evidence in healthcare policy and operations.
There are two key research themes to my position which are:
1. INTERPRETATION OF EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLINICAL AND CONSUMER EDUCATION Providing input into the development of education and communication packages for clinicians and consumers (i.e. clear communication and dissemination of evidence to support changes to clinical practice/patients)
2. IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING CHANGE - Assist with implementing evidence based change in the health system (NSW mainly) and conducting rigorous evaluations of these changes.
My research in this area is currently evolving but it is anticipated that it may involve:
a) Supporting the design of interventions to implement evidence based practice;
b) Conducting process evaluations of change on the ground as they are rolled out;
c) Working with the wider Perinatal Research Team to provide advice on analysis linking processes to outcomes in routinely collected data.
Teaching areas
I have five years experience as a Lecturer (and Course Coordinator) at the University of Newcastle. My teaching portfolio consisted of the development, delivery and evaluation of health sociology and health services related teaching.
