Biographical details

Senior Research Fellow (Hon) in the Discipline of Physiology, at the University of Sydney’s Medical School.

Former Director of the Biosceptre Cancer Laboratory and NH&MRC Industry Fellow.


Research interests

The use of purinergic antibodies to identify prostate cancer 9 years before it can be diagnosed by H&E stain. Using these antibodies, we cured a Basal Cell Carcinoma of the ear in 16 days by restoring apoptosis and the natural cell cycle. Applying these discoveries to a variety of cancers.

Personal – quantum physics, cosmology, 16th century choral music, fine food, good conversation.


Teaching and supervision

Supervision of Hons and PhD students, Tutor in the Graduate Medical Program, Lecturer in Pathophysiology at Cumberland College, Undergraduate Physiology and Biology, Teacher-in-Charge, Sydney TAFE Pathology and Biological Technicians Certificates.

I am a student in the Masters of Public Health degree as well as my duties in the Medical School.

Awards and honours

My paper: Slater M, Danieletto S, Gidley-Baird A, Teh LC and Barden JA (2012) Early prostate cancer detected using expression of non-functional cytolytic P2X7 receptors. Histopathology 44:206-215. This paper won the Roger Cotton prize for the best paper of the year in Histopathology and formed the main Intellectual Property for the formation of Biosceptre, a company I co-founded to create products from our discoveries, now based at Cambridge in the UK

As an NH&MRC Industry Fellow (only 6 in Australasia), I raised $960,000 in research funding for the University with a large contribution from the investors who funded the creation of Biosceptre
