Michael Kidd is Executive Dean of Health Sciences (including the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing and Midwifery) at Flinders University in South Australia. He also works as a general practitioner with a special interest in the care of people with HIV. He is an Honorary Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Sydney.

In 2010 Michael was elected as the next President of the World Organization of Family Doctors (Wonca). He was President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners from 2002-2006.

From 1995-2009 Michael was Professor of General Practice at The University of Sydney and, from 1998-2009, Head of the Discipline of General Practice. He was also Associate Dean for professional, government and community relations with the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Sydney.

He has research and education interests in primary health care and general practice, medical informatics, health policy, medical education, safety and quality in primary care, and the primary care management of HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmissible infections. He has a Doctorate of Medicine in medical education from Monash University.

He is the chair of the Australian Government's Ministerial Advisory Committee on Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections. He is a member of the Australian Government's Medical Training Review Panel. He is a past chair of the Australian Government's National HIV/AIDS Committee and a past member of the Australian National Council on AIDS, Hepatitis C and Related Diseases. He is a past member of the Australian Health Information Council which provided advice to Australian Health Ministers on long term directions and national strategic reform issues for information management and technology in health. He is past chair of the Australian Government's MediConnect Project on electronic prescribing, and a past member of the board of the Australian Government's HealthConnect program. He is a past chair of the Australian General Practice Computing Group which worked with the Australian Government to lead the computerisation of Australian general practice. He has been an advisor on aspects of health informatics to governments in several other countries including Canada, Ireland and New Zealand.

He is chair of Doctors for the Environment Australia. He is a Director of Therapeutic Guidelines Limited, a Director of the Arts and Health Foundation, a Director of the Channel 7 Children?s Research Foundation, a Director of Flinders Reproductive Medicine, a Director of the Improvement Foundation Australia, a Director of Northern Territory General Practice Education, a Director of the Cora Barclay Centre. He is a Board Member of the Cooperative Research Centre in Aboriginal Health, a Board Member of the Research Foundation of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and a member of the Advisory Board of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health at The University of Sydney. He is a member of the National Standing Committee on Education of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He is the Patron of the Australian General Practice Students Network.

At an international level he is an elected board member and the treasurer of Wonca (The World Organization of Family Doctors), convenes the Wonca Education Working Party and is the Wonca liaison person with the World Health Organization. He is a member of the International Research Advisory Board of the United Kingdom Biobank Project. He is involved in medical education and assessment in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and the Middle East. He led the education and research activities of the Faculties of Health at The University of Sydney in Timor-Leste. Since 2008 he has been working with the World Health Organization as an adviser on the primary care management of mental health in the island nations of the Western Pacific region and as an adviser on the development of chronic disease prevention and management initiatives in low and middle income nations. He is also a consultant to the World Health Organization on the development of a global learning program to support the renewal of primary health care.

He is the founder and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Medical Case Reports, the world's first peer-reviewed medical journal dedicated to case reports from all medical disciplines. He is a member of the editorial boards of several other international journals. He is co-editor of the textbook "Health Informatics: an Overview" and wrote the chapters on "HIV/AIDS" and "Computers in the Consultation" in the Oxford Textbook of Primary Care Medicine. He is the author with Professor Leanne Rowe of "Save your life and the lives of those you love - your GP?s six step guide to good health", published by Allen and Unwin in 2007 and reissued in 2011. His latest book, also written with Professor Leanne Rowe, is "First do no harm: how to be a resilient doctor in the 21st century" which was released worldwide by McGraw Hill in September 2009.

In 2007 he was a Visiting Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he was researching aspects of primary care in developing nations which included field work in Africa, India, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In 2008 he spent two months as a volunteer assisting in the establishment of new primary care-based HIV testing and treatment services in rural areas in the Limpopo province of South Africa.

He has been awarded honorary fellowships of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia and the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka and life membership of the General Practitioners Society of Nepal. In 2007 he received the Australian Medical Association Award for Excellence in Health Care in recognition of his contribution to primary care, medical education and the health care of disadvantaged people in Australia. In 2008 he was one of 1000 Australians invited by the Prime Minister of Australia to participate in the Australia 2020 Summit, to help shape a long term strategy for the nation's future. In 2008 he was named one of the 100 most influential people in Sydney by the Sydney Morning Herald's Sydney Magazine. In 2009 he was made an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Sydney.

In the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2009 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to medicine and education in the areas of general practice and primary health care and through a range of professional organisations. [Hide detail]
