Biographical details

Mohamed is an international medical graduate from Libya with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB BCh) from University of Tripoli, Libya 2017. After finishing his internship in 2008, Mohamed came to Australia for higher training in child health of international standards. He joined the University of New South Wales as a Masters student where he obtained a combined degree as Master of Public Health and Health Management in 2011. Subsequently, he completed a Master of International Public Health (with Distinction) in 2012 with substantial component in Child Health.

Due to his intense interest in the field of immunology and vaccination, Mohamed joined the National Centre for ImmunisationResearch and Surveillance (NCIRS) at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead as a PhD student through the University of Sydney in 2013. His clinical research revolves around exploring how new novel conjugate vaccines interact with each other and with other routine childhood vaccines such as DTP/Tdap vaccine.

Although these vaccines are predominantly administered to children, adult Hajj travelers provided a unique opportunity to explore the interaction of conjugate vaccine with other carrier proteins because the pilgrims are obliged to receive the vaccines as pre-travel requirement. Therefore, joined the Hajj Research Team at NCIRS and embarked on this randomised controlled trial entitled “Optimising immunity of Australian Hajj pilgrims”. The trial aims to maximise vulnerable populations’ immunity arising from conjugate vaccines and the implications of the findings can also be tailored to optimise children’s immunisation schedules particularly in poor settings and developing countries.

After embarking on this project, he was awarded the International Robert Austrian Research Award in Pneumococcal Vaccinology 2014 by the International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD) which contributed in the funding of his research. As part of the award, he has been also invited to present the outcome of his research in the ISPPD conferencesinGlasgow, UK, June 2016.

The recruitment process of his trial provided him with an outstanding opportunity to engage in society, explore vaccinees’ fear and concerns about travel-related diseases such as pneumococcal and meningococcal disease and other viral infections. He has regularly conducted health advice sessions among Muslims communities to increase their awareness about travel diseases and the importance of health preventive measures.

While writing his thesis Mohamed started a part time role as a Research Officer working on Immunisation Program Evaluation at NCIRS. The role involves evaluating newly implemented immunisation programs in Australia, interviewing stakeholders and collate their feedback and recommendations to the Australian Department of Health.

Mohamed’s PhD thesis has been approved by the University of Sydney and he graduated in December 2017. Later on, he has been assigned as a staff/affiliate and added to the University’s supervisor register as an auxiliary supervisor.
