Biographical details

Dr Komala completed his training in Nephrology and secured a PhD after work on the role of SGLT2 inhibitors and DPP4 inhibitors in preventing diabetic nephropathy at the Kolling institute through Sydney University. He is a Staff Specialist Nephrologist at Nepean Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Nepean Clinical School. He has been actively involved in teaching medical students and providing lectures for the Masters programmes organised by Sydney University. His areas of clinical interest include all aspects of Nephrology and Obstetric medicine. He has a special interest in electrolyte disturbances and is actively involved in regular teaching sessions for the junior doctors in this area. He is also interested in the evolving management of anaemia in kidney disease.

Research interests

Electrolyte and acid base disturbances, Prevention of Diabetic Nephropathy, Acute Kidney Injury, Chronic Kidney Disease, Fabry’s disease, management of anaemia in kidney disease.

Teaching and supervision

He is involved in teaching medical students, physician trainees and supervising advanced trainees in Nephrology. His teaching interests include management of electrolyte and acid base disorders, genetic renal diseases, newer agents in prevention of diabetic nephropathy and anaemia in kidney disease.

  1. Multicentre study evaluating the role of Daprudostat in managing anaemia of kidney disease
  2. Multicentre study looking at interventions to prevent dialysis catheter related infection (Reducction Study)
