Biographical details

Nick completed a BSc(Hons) and PhD in the UK. He then spent 3 years as a postdoctoral researcher in Sheffield before moving to the Australian National University in 1977 as a Research Fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research. He moved to Pathology, University of Sydney in 1988 as Senior Lecturer and was appointed Professor of Pathology in 1989.

In 2003 he became Director of the then Institute for Biomedical Research. In 2006 the IBR was absorbed into the newly-created Bosch Institute and he was appointed Executive Director of the new entity, continuing until 2009.

He is Chief Editor of the journal Redox Report and on the editorial boards of several other international journals, including American Journal of Pathology.

Research interests

Nick Hunt is well-known for his studies of the severe illness caused by malaria infection and his interest in free radical biology and inflammation. He also has contributed to understanding the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism and its involvement in normal physiology and in disease. The pathogenesis of meningitis is a recent area of interest.
