Biographical details

Nicola Newton is an Associate Professor and Director of Prevention at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney. She also Prevention Lead at the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Prevention and Early Intervention in Mental Illness and Substance Use (PREMISE). Nicola holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons Class 1) from Macquarie University (2005) and a PhD from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at the University of New South Wales Sydney (UNSW; 2009). After completing her PhD, she spent 2 years (2009-2011) on an international postdoctoral research fellowship at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, UK, followed by 7 years as a research academic at NDARC, UNSW before moving to the Matilda Centre in December 2018. Nicola is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow (Level 2) and is Vice-president for the Alliance for the Prevention of Mental Disorders.

A/Prof Newton leads an internationally renowned program of research in the prevention of substance use and mental health problems in adolescence. She has a focus on e-health to improve implementation and sustainability of interventions and developed the first web-based programs to prevent substance use among adolescents; theClimate Schoolsprograms for drug prevention. She has extensive experience leading school-based clinical trials in Australia and the UK (6 RCTs with 14,600 students from 169 schools) and has received national and international recognition for her research, including the 2016 Society for Mental Health Rising Star Award and the 2017 Australian Drug Foundation Award for Innovation in Prevention and Education.

Nicola has authored 96 publications, including 70 peer-reviewed publications (22 first author; 2256 citations), 7 book chapters, and 19 reports, and published 14 drug education resources. She is Deputy Editor for the journal Drug and Alcohol Review. In addition, she has secured over $34 million (>$10M Cat 1) in competitive research funding to carry out large clinical trials is currently leading grants with the NHMRC, the Australian Government Department of Health and the Paul Ramsay Foundation to evaluate and translate evidence-based interventions into practice.
