Professor Nicola Newton

Professor Nicola Newton is the Director of Prevention Research at the Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use at the University of Sydney where she leadsan internationally renowned program of research to advance the prevention of substance use and mental disorders.She is also a co-Director of the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence - PREMISE (Prevention and Early Intervention in Mental Illness and Substance Use) Next Generation, and Vice President of the Alliance for the Prevention of Mental Disorders.

Prof Newton holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons Class 1) from Macquarie University (2005) and a PhD from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, at UNSW (2009). After her PhD, Nicola spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at King’s College London, then 7 years as a research fellow at NDARC, before commencing her role at the Matilda Centre in Dec 2018.

Prof Newtonis a national and international authority on school-based substance use prevention, having led some of the largest and longest trials of substance use prevention in schools (8 RCTs; >240 schools; >21K students) and commercialising the first effective eHealth prevention programs for substance use in schools (reaching >38K students; >1.4K schools). She has received national and international recognition for her work through 34 awards, including the 2024Australian Rotary Health Mental Health Impact Award.

Prof Newton has authored 210 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals (>6,800 citations; h index 43), 12 book chapters, 47 reports and 27 educational resources. She is an Assistant Editor for the journals Drug & Alcohol Review and Addiction. She has secured >$51 million as a Chief Investigator in competitive research funding for clinical trials and translation (>$8.5M CIA) and is currently leading grants from the NHMRC, MRFF, Movember Foundation, and the Aust Govt Dept Health.Prof Newton advises state and federal health and education departments on substance use and vaping prevention.
